What Does Florida’s FLHSMV Do?

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) handles all services for drivers in the state, including driver licensing and ID card applications and renewals; vehicle titles, registrations, and renewals; driving records; and boat licensing and registration.

When you move to Florida, you must exchange your driver’s license within 30 days and apply for a vehicle registration within 10 days after establishing residency in the state. Prior to registering your vehicle, you must obtain FL car insurance.

The FLHSMV also has specific information geared toward its military residents and non-residents, in order to accommodate the unique circumstances that military service brings. Non-residents stationed in Florida are not required to get a FL license or registration while serving in the state. For residents serving out of state, you can renew online or by mail.

Online and Third-Party Services

The Florida DHSMV offers online services through their GoRenew and myDMV portals. These services include:

  • Appointment scheduling
  • Driver license/ID card renewal
  • Duplicate licenses and IDs
  • Vehicle registration renewal
  • Duplicate registrations
  • Specialty plate orders
  • Address updates

You can also access many driver and vehicle forms online.

You can access the Florida Driver Handbook online, in addition to the Motorcycle and Commercial driver handbooks. Looking to study for your license exam? The FLHSMV offers an online practice test to give you the extra prep you need.

The FLHSMV partners with a number of authorized third-parties for driver testing for both standard licenses and CDLs, as well as motorcycle training courses and CDL skills testing.
