What Does Maine’s OMV Do?

The Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles (OMV) handles all services for drivers in the state, including driver licensing and ID card applications and renewals; vehicle titles, registrations, and renewals; and driving records. The Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife is responsible for boat registration in Maine.

When you move to Maine, you must exchange your driver’s license and apply for a vehicle registration within 30 days of establishing residency in the state. Prior to registering your vehicle, you must first have a safety inspection performed at an approved inspection location. Cumberland County residents must also undergo an emissions inspection along with your safety check.

Military non-residents stationed in Maine are not required to get a ME license or registration while serving in the state.

Online and Third-Party Services

The Maine BMV’s online services include:

You can access many licensing and vehicle forms online. You can also access the Maine Driver Handbook online, in addition to the Motorcycle and Commercial driver handbooks.

The BMV partners with third-party servicers to handle tasks such as driver education and title replacements.
