What Does Minnesota’s DVS Do?

The Minnesota Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) Division handles all services for drivers in the state, including driver licensing and ID card applications and renewals; vehicle titles, registrations, and renewals; and driving records. The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) handles boat registrations and licenses.

When you move to Minnesota, you must exchange your driver’s license and apply for a vehicle registration within 60 days of establishing residency in the state. Vehicle inspections aren’t required for most vehicles.

The DVS also has specific information geared toward its military residents and non-residents, in order to accommodate the unique circumstances that military service brings. Non-residents stationed in Minnesota are not required to get a MN license or registration while serving in the state.

Online and Third-Party Services

The Minnesota DVS offers several online services including:

  • Appointment scheduling
  • Driver’s permit and license pre-applications
  • License status lookup
  • License refund requests
  • Reinstatement fee payment
  • Registration renewals
  • Duplicate registrations
  • Title/plate status checks

You can access many licensing and vehicle forms online. You can also access the Minnesota Driver Manual online, in addition to the Motorcycle and Commercial driver handbooks.

The MN DVS also partners with third-party servicers for driver education courses, motorcycle training and testing, and applicable vehicle inspections.
