What Does Montana’s MVD Do?

The Montana Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) handles all services for drivers in the state, including driver licensing and ID card applications and renewals; vehicle titles, registrations, and renewals; driving records; and boat registration.

When you move to Montana, you must exchange your driver’s license and apply for a vehicle registration within 60 days of establishing residency in the state. Montana does not currently have any vehicle inspection requirements.

The MVD also has specific information geared toward its military residents and non-residents, in order to accommodate the unique circumstances that military service brings. Non-residents stationed in Montana are not required to get a MT license or registration while serving in the state.

Online and Third-Party Services

The Montana MVD offers several online services, including:

  • Appointments
  • Driver license renewal
  • License status checks
  • Registration renewal
  • Temporary registration permits
  • Driving records
  • Motor vehicle records

You can access many licensing and registration forms online. You can also access the Montana Driver Manual online, in addition to the Motorcycle and Commercial driver handbooks. To prepare for your licensing exam, you can also download a practice test app.

The MT MVD also partners with third-parties to conduct services including title and tag services and motorcycle training and testing.
