The South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV) handles all services for drivers in the state, including driver licensing and ID card applications and renewals; vehicle titles, registrations, and renewals; boat registrations; and driving records.
When you move to South Carolina, you must exchange your driver’s license and apply for a vehicle registration immediately after establishing residency in the state—there is no grace period. Before titling and registering your vehicle, you must first contact your county auditor to pay your property tax.
SCDMV also has specific information geared toward its military residents and non-residents, in order to accommodate the unique circumstances that military service brings. Non-residents stationed in South Carolina are not required to get a SC license or registration while serving in the state.
