What Does The North Carolina DMV Do?

The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) handles all services for drivers in the state, including driver licensing and ID card applications and renewals; vehicle titles, registrations, and renewals; and driving records. The NC Wildlife Resources Commission is responsible for boat/vessel registrations and mandatory boater education.

When you move to North Carolina, you must exchange your driver’s license and apply for a vehicle registration within 60 days of establishing residency in the state. Your vehicle must also undergo a safety inspection when you bring it into the state; if you live in one of 22 required counties, you must also take it for an emissions inspection.

The DMV also has specific information geared toward its military residents and non-residents, in order to accommodate the unique circumstances that military service brings. Non-residents stationed in North Carolina are not required to get a NC license or registration while serving in the state.
