What Does The Wisconsin DMV Do?

The Wisconsin Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) handles all services for drivers in the state, including driver licensing and ID card applications and renewals; vehicle titles, registrations, and renewals; and driving records. The Department of Natural Resources is responsible for boat registration as well as boater safety and licensing.

When you move to Wisconsin, you must exchange your driver’s license and apply for a vehicle registration within 60 days of establishing residency in the state. Prior to registering your vehicle, you’ll need to take it for an emissions inspection if you live in a participating county.

The DMV also has specific information geared toward its military residents and non-residents, in order to accommodate the unique circumstances that military service brings. Non-residents stationed in Wisconsin are not required to get a WI license or registration while serving in the state.
